11/17/2022 Update: This post included more than 15 photos, which have since disappeared … will re-upload them when I can track them down again.
Book club meeting at Sky Cafe in South San Francisco. Believe it or not, the food is all vegan. Hurray! At 11:30 AM on a Sunday, all menu items (breakfast, lunch and dinner) were available. The restaurant features an indoor seating area in the front and a well-ventilated patio seating area in the back. There’s a stage for live music in the outdoor area as well. Plenty of street parking out front.

First, let’s talk about the food!
My friend ordered the traditional or “sweet” version of the chicken and waffles, which comes with vegan butter and maple syrup, fruit and French fries. Enticed by the idea of vegan chicken and waffles, but wanting something different, I ordered the chicken and waffles, “savory version.” This turned out to be a vegan fried chicken sandwich with waffles as the bread, and creamy cole slaw as the dressing, plus fruit and French fries.

Now, let’s take a look at that tasty vegan menu.
According to the Sky Cafe web site, the menu changes frequently. In the photos below, I’m sharing what was available when we were there (March 2022). At first, I wondered if this truly is a vegan restaurant, as the menu features chicken, bacon and eggs. Rest assured, it’s all vegan. (As an example, instead of chicken eggs, the dishes feature the “Just Egg” product, made from mung beans.) The menu looked so good, I can’t wait to come back.

On a different note, the menu doesn’t specify soy, gluten, coconut, cashews or other allergens as potential ingredients for the fake bacon, chicken, beef, and so on. For me personally, that’s no problem, as I have no food allergies. However, I’d recommend that Sky Cafe include that information on the menu, to help those who do need to be forewarned about specific ingredients.
Patio Dining at Sky Cafe Vegan in South San Francisco
I’m not sure if Sky Cafe caters private parties, but if so … with the music stage, this could be a lovely venue for an event with delicious all vegan food, such as a milestone birthday or other gathering. I’m not sure if it’s technically considered “outdoors,” as there is a glass roof above, but one side is simply a fence, and it has heat lamps. Seems rather outdoorsy to me! If you go from the dining area, through the lounge area, to the hallway, it’s open to the outdoors at the back.

A bit more about the LOCATION
After we ate, I went for a walk in the downtown. It’s lovely here.

Years ago, I organized a group bike ride from the SF ferry building down to South San Francisco, and we came to this very same area: the downtown “Main Street,” which is actually called “Grand Avenue.” I would love to try the bike ride again.
Looking forward to a return trip to vegan Sky Cafe, at 223 Grand Avenue, South San Francisco CA 94134. Phone: (650) 989-8588.
